DINOSAURS IN FLESH AND BONE

A Prehistoric Animal Theme Park

Parco della Resistenza
Via della Repubblica, San Lazzaro di Savena - Bologna (BO)
2023-2024 Season

Dinosaurs in Flesh and Bone - an exhibition conceived and launched in Italy - is now in San Lazzaro di Savena with a spectacular new set-up that has transformed it into an authentic prehistoric theme park.

Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals are the undeniable protagonists: indeed, there are 37 models - all rigorously life-sized, some gigantic - that tell the story of the evolution of life on Earth. Prominent among these are beloved and famous reptiles of the Mesozoic, such as T-rex and the spinosaur, as well as species that once lived in Italy, such as Scipionyx - a dinosaur known from a fossilized hatchling nicknamed "Ciro" - the hadrosaur Tethyshadros, the titanosaur known as "Tito", and the carnivorous Saltriovenator.

The inclusion of prehistoric mammals makes a visit to the theme park the natural complement to a trip to the Luigi Donini Museum of Prehistory, which is devoted to fossilized remains and reconstructions of animals that once lived in the environs of Bologna and to the recounting of the history of human evolution. Over 50 species are represented at the park and museum, making the San Lazzaro di Savena exhibition circuit the richest themed area of its kind in Italy.

Visitors will be led through prehistory along a route immersed in a very evocative natural setting - indeed, the theme park is also a proper botanical garden assembled from trees and bushes that hark back to a very distant past.

The poses and gestures given to the ancient creatures on display are the result of in-depth studies conducted by the Dinosaurs in Flesh and Bone palaeontologists and the mastery of palaeoarts, all of whom worked passionately together.

The theme park, which is under the auspices of the Municipality of San Lazzaro di Savena in collaboration with the Luigi Donini Museum of Prehistory, was realized by the Venetian firm GeoModel s.r.l. on the basis of an architectural and landscape project conceived by Case Falavino Architettura; it is curated by the palaeontologist Simone Maganuco. We also conduct extensive teaching activities aimed at schools of all types and grades: these include educational and recreational activities, guided tours, excursions to the surrounding area and laboratories calibrated for various age/schooling ranges (preschool and primary/secondary schools). Our media partner is Radio Città Fujiko.
